Paramedics are urging Londoners to help them install life-saving defibrillators by taking part in the London Ambulance Charity’s Dragon Boat Race.

The community resuscitation team at London Ambulance Service, who took part in the race last year, are installing defibrillators in neighbourhoods across London and are asking Londoners to fundraise to buy one of these devices.

The London Ambulance Charity’s Heart Starters campaign is installing 200 defibrillators in London communities where there is little access to one of these life-saving devices.

Sam Cox, Community Resuscitation Training Officer at London Ambulance Service and Team Captain for the Defib Dragons, said:

“When a cardiac arrest occurs, every minute counts. Quick thinking from bystanders and fast access to a defib makes the difference between life and death.

“As a team, we see first-hand the life-saving impact fundraising can have for local communities. It allows us to get defibs out to the areas that need them most and train people in CPR skills across London. This makes a big difference to cardiac arrest survival in the capital.

“Londoners can help us give people the best chance of survival by fundraising for these life-saving devices at our charity events such as the Dragon Boat Race – and you’ll have a lot of fun in the process!

“We’re working hard to get defibs installed in the local areas that need them but we need Londoners to raise money for more defibs and offer to host them outside their buildings.

“By taking to the water in this exciting challenge you can help reduce health inequalities in our neighbourhoods across the capital.”

Set against the backdrop of Surrey Quays on Thursday 16 July, the Dragon Boat Race invites teams to paddle hard to the beat of drums and make a real difference.

Money will directly fund life-saving equipment, CPR training, and improve the wellbeing of London Ambulance staff and volunteers.

Dating back more than 2,000 years to ancient China, Dragon Boat Racing is steeped in tradition. The striking boats – complete with dragon heads, scales and tails – are crewed by 10 paddlers and a drummer who sets the rhythm, as teams race over thrilling 200-metre sprints.

The event is fully inclusive and we welcome participants of all abilities – no prior experience is required.
