25-40s continue to drive switching as Gen Z activity grows
People aged 25-40 remained the most active switchers during Q2 2026, carrying out 121,251 switches, accounting for more than 42% of all switching activity.
The age group completed almost three times as many switches as those aged 18-24, who accounted for 40,949 switches during the quarter.
Despite historically lower switching activity among 18–24-year-olds, the age group has seen continued growth this quarter. Completed switches increased by almost a fifth (18%) compared with Q1 2026, signaling rising engagement with account switching among Gen Z consumers.
The figures reinforce that young people are increasingly open to better banking offers. This comes as recent research by Pay.UK revealed that young people who are leaving school want a bank account that helps them budget and plan (29%), but a quarter (26%) say not knowing how to choose an account puts them off switching.
John Dentry, Product Manager at Pay.UK, owner and operator of the Current Account Switch Service, said:  “The latest Regional Rankings demonstrate the continued strength of competition within the UK’s banking sector, with hundreds of thousands of consumers taking advantage of the opportunity to move to an account that better meets their needs.”
“It is particularly encouraging to see increasing numbers of young people switching bank accounts alongside the sustained popularity of switching among those aged 25-40. Whether people are looking for better digital services, stronger rewards or improved value, the Current Account Switch Service makes it quick and easy to move accounts with confidence.
