BFI IMAX today announces details of a programme celebrating five-time Academy Award®-winning director, screenwriter and producer Alejandro G. Iñárritu to accompany the release of DIGGER (2026), which opens on the UK’s largest screen in IMAX with Laser from Friday 2 October, including the special event Alejandro G. Iñárritu in Conversation on 21 September.
A highlight of the programme will be the UK IMAX premiere of BARDO, FALSE CHRONICLE OF A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS (2022). Iñárritu’s deeply personal film will screen exclusively in IMAX with Laser for the very first time in the UK. We also play a new 4K restoration of Iñárritu’s debut feature, the BAFTA®-winning and Oscar®-nominated AMORES PERROS (1993) – a kinetic triptych of modern life in Mexico City. Meanwhile, relentless revenge drama THE REVENANT (2016) finds Leonardo DiCaprio and Iñárritu on muscular, BAFTA® and Oscar®-winning form as it returns to BFI IMAX following its tenth anniversary release in IMAX with Laser earlier this year. We also screen BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE) (2014), which features a career-defining performance from Michael Keaton and earned Iñárritu his first Academy Awards® for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
We are delighted that Alejandro G. Iñárritu also joins us in person at BFI IMAX on 21 September for the very special event, Alejandro G. Iñárritu in Conversation, when the Oscar® and BAFTA®-winning filmmaker will discuss his decades-spanning career ahead of the release of his next feature, DIGGER (2026). Starring BFI Fellow Tom Cruise in the title role, the most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything. This highly anticipated film from Warner Bros. Pictures opens on the UK’s largest screen at BFI IMAX in IMAX with Laser from Friday 2 October.
Tickets for the Alejandro G. Iñárritu programme at BFI IMAX will be on sale on Wednesday 2 September from 11am to BFI Patrons, 12pm to BFI Members and from 4pm to the general public. Details of ticket on sale for DIGGER at BFI IMAX will be announced soon.

THE REVENANT (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2015)
IMAX with Laser
A frontiersman guiding a group of fur traders through the perils of the American wilderness of the 1820s finds true monstrousness hiding in the heart of a man after he is mauled by a bear. DiCaprio and Iñárritu are on muscular, BAFTA® and Oscar®-winning form in this adaptation of Michael Punke’s non-fiction novel. The stunning vistas, photographed by Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki in his BAFTA® and Academy Award®-winning cinematography, and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s haunting score underpin the film’s visceral action sequences.

ALEJANDRO G. IÑÁRRITU IN CONVERSATION
Five-time Academy Award®-winning director, screenwriter and producer Alejandro G. Iñárritu joins us live in person to discuss his decades-spanning career ahead of the release of his next feature, DIGGER (2026).
MON 21 SEP 19:00, BFI IMAX
AMORES PERROS (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2000) + intro
Digital 4K
Iñárritu made more than a splash at Cannes with his kinetic triptych of modern life in Mexico City. In this BAFTA®-winning and Oscar®-nominated film, a car accident brings together the lives of very different characters: two young punks seeking a quick fortune, a young model whose life is about to dramatically change and a seemingly benevolent dog lover with a surprising profession. Written by Guillermo Arriaga, it’s a blazing portrait of city life.
SUN 27 SEP 11:30, BFI IMAX
DIGGER (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2026)
IMAX with Laser
One of contemporary cinema’s most daring filmmakers teams up with its biggest star. Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu returns with his original film, starring BFI Fellow Tom Cruise in the title role as the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything
FROM FRI 2 OCT, BFI IMAX
BARDO, FALSE CHRONICLE OF A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2022) + intro
IMAX with Laser
A deeply personal exploration of what it means to create – encompassing the hollow reward of success and the toll it can ultimately take – feeds into a portrait of Silverio Gama, a celebrated documentary filmmaker questioning his very existence. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, Iñárritu’s film is by turns witty, ruminative, impressively staged, and a glorious example of a filmmaker willing to take chances to produce something wholly original. There is nothing else quite like it.
SUN 4 OCT 11:00, BFI IMAX
BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE) (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2014) + intro
Digital
An actor famed for his role as a superhero decides to resuscitate his creativity by directing an adaptation of a Raymond Carver short story, but is soon beset by all manner of problems. Keaton gives a dazzling performance as a man nearing the precipice of sanity. He’s supported by a superb cast, while Iñárritu’s roving camera – deceptively presented as a single-take – helped earn the filmmaker his first Academy Awards® for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, as well as Best Cinematography for Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki.
