The winds of change are blowing through Stamford Bridge once again. Following a disastrous 2025/26 campaign that saw Chelsea finish 10th and miss out on European football entirely, star midfielder Enzo Fernandez has reportedly made it clear he wants to leave the club.
As incoming head coach Xabi Alonso prepares to officially take the reins on July 1, he faces a massive midfield dilemma. While Alonso views the Argentine World Cup winner as a crucial leader for his rebuild, Chelsea’s hierarchy is prepared to sanction a sale, provided suitors meet a staggering, club-record £120million valuation.
With Fernandez’s agent already making moves and Chelsea plotting an ambitious swoop for Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes as the ultimate replacement, the summer transfer window is shaping up to be a frantic one in West London.
Enzo Fernandez is an exceptional, box-crashing player when in the mood. He’s a world champion. His numbers at Chelsea are decent, 10 goals and four assists in the Premier League this season. But if Fernandez is keen on a move because Chelsea’s aren’t in Europe, as is being…

The Enzo Dilemma: Real Madrid Calling?
Despite a turbulent season, Fernandez was statistically one of Chelsea’s brightest sparks, finishing runner-up for the club’s Player of the Season award with 15 goals and seven assists. However, the 25-year-old’s relationship with the club has not been without friction.
Following a two-game suspension in March for flirting with a move to Real Madrid via the media, and the lingering memory of his 2024 apology to teammates over a live-streamed racist song, Fernandez is now actively seeking an exit. His agent, Javier Pastore, has already established contact with Real Madrid, which remains the midfielder’s preferred destination.
The stumbling block for Los Blancos is the fee. Chelsea are refusing to take a loss on the £106m they paid Benfica in January 2023. Real Madrid are reportedly unwilling to match the £120m asking price without raising significant funds through player sales. Furthermore, Florentino Perez and the Madrid hierarchy are still debating whether they need a versatile No. 8 like Fernandez or a more defined No. 6, like Manchester City’s Rodri.
Speaking of Manchester City, incoming boss Enzo Maresca, who recently left Chelsea for the Etihad, is a huge admirer of Fernandez. However, City are unwilling to meet the exorbitant price tag, keeping their priority focus on Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson instead.

Filling the Void: Enter Bruno Guimaraes
If Fernandez’s departure is finalized, Chelsea will be left with a gaping hole alongside their other £100m-plus investment, Moises Caicedo. Senior figures at the club have acknowledged the need for Premier League-ready talent to anchor Alonso’s new-look side, and Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has emerged as the dream candidate.
Newcastle, who suffered an equally underwhelming campaign to finish 12th, are facing financial pressures of their own. Pundits and fans alike believe the Brazilian possesses exactly the kind of presence Chelsea have missed since their title-winning days.
Speaking on talkSPORT’s Inside Chelsea podcast, Blues superfan Matisse Armani likened the potential signing of Guimaraes to a former Stamford Bridge hero: “He’s got that bite, that physicality, that threat from set pieces, just shooting from range. That is the type of personality that we’re lacking, in terms of someone that’s going to go in there and be that Nemanja Matic figure, that person that’s got some presence.”
Since arriving on Tyneside in 2022 for £40m, Guimaraes has been a revelation, racking up 31 goals and 32 assists in 195 appearances across all competitions. Not only would his arrival bring elite physicality and leadership to Chelsea’s midfield, but his Brazilian roots would provide seamless integration for the club’s growing South American contingent, including Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian, and Andrey Santos.
The Domino Effect
Chelsea are adamant they will not be bullied in the transfer market. As talkSPORT presenter Olivia Buzaglo noted: “Chelsea won’t take a loss. So if Real Madrid want to stump up the money, then fair play. But if you don’t, Enzo Fernandez will be a Chelsea player next season.”
However, keeping an unhappy player could have a negative domino effect on a dressing room that desperately needs unifying under Alonso. Should Real Madrid or another European heavyweight blink and meet the £120m asking price, Chelsea will be armed with a colossal war chest to lure Guimaraes away from St. James’ Park.
For now, the standoff continues, but all eyes are on Stamford Bridge to see who will make the first move in what promises to be a defining summer for Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea.
