FULHAM 2 – 0 NEWCASTLE UNITED Diop 20′, Cairney 80′
If this was indeed Marco Silva’s final match in the Craven Cottage dugout, his players ensured he received the perfect send-off. Fulham comfortably dispatched an incredibly flat Newcastle United side 2-0 on the final day of the Premier League season, leapfrogging the Magpies to secure an 11th-place finish.
With Silva out of contract next month and heavily linked with a move to Benfica, the Portuguese manager has promised clarity on his future in the coming days. Yet, Sunday’s dominant performance illustrated exactly why the Fulham hierarchy has offered him a new three-year deal in a desperate bid to keep him in West London.
Dominance in the London Heat
Played in sweltering 32°C conditions, both sides entered the afternoon tied on 49 points with their European ambitions already mathematically extinguished. However, it was Fulham who played with the intensity of a team with everything on the line.
The hosts completely dictated the tempo from the opening whistle and broke the deadlock in the 20th minute. Brazilian winger Kevin, brought into the starting XI for this final fixture, curled a magnificent free-kick that crashed against the crossbar. Issa Diop was the quickest to react to the rebound, rising to nod the ball into the empty net past a stranded Nick Pope.
Newcastle, who have endured a miserable run of away form in 2026, looked completely devoid of ideas in response. Eddie Howe’s men managed a meagre seven shots all afternoon, generating a dismal Expected Goals (xG) tally of just 0.25.
Iwobi Pulls the Strings
Central to Fulham’s dominance was Alex Iwobi. Operating in a slightly more withdrawn midfield role to accommodate Kevin, the Nigerian international ran the show. He orchestrated Fulham’s attacks with supreme confidence, registering 74 touches, attempting six shots, and creating three chances, all match-high figures.
Despite racking up 21 shots overall (worth 1.69 xG), Fulham had to wait until the 80th minute to finally put the game to bed.
The second goal possessed a distinct tinge of finality to it. Harry Wilson, enjoying a career-best campaign but also out of contract this summer, laid the ball off perfectly for substitute captain Tom Cairney. From the edge of the area, Cairney thundered a stunning left-footed strike past Pope to double the advantage and seal the three points.
A Dismal End for Howe’s Magpies
While Craven Cottage celebrated another impressive home victory, their 11th of the campaign, the mood in the away end was distinctly sour.
Eddie Howe cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as Newcastle’s campaign ended with a whimper. Failing to keep a clean sheet for the eighth consecutive match, the Magpies slip to 12th place in the final standings. It marks Newcastle’s lowest Premier League finish since 2022 and their worst placement under Howe’s leadership.
For Fulham, they match last season’s 11th-place finish. Whether Marco Silva will be at the helm to attempt to push them into the top half next August remains the biggest question in West London.
