Oscar Bobb scored his first Fulham goal to send the Cottagers into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as they edged a thrilling 3-2 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium.
Fulham twice surrendered the lead during an action-packed first half before Bobb came off the bench to produce the decisive moment 12 minutes from time.
The evening began with a poignant tribute from the home supporters, who paid their respects to former West Ham goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko before kick-off. Miklosko, who made almost 400 appearances for the club between 1990 and 1998, recently died aged 64 following cancer.
Once the match got under way, the focus quickly shifted to an entertaining contest on the pitch.
Fulham made the brighter start and were rewarded after just 13 minutes. Rodrigo Muniz put the visitors ahead with a precision header from César Palacios’ cross, giving Álvaro Arbeloa’s side an early advantage.
West Ham’s response was almost immediate. Just three minutes later, Morato levelled for the hosts following a West Ham corner, ensuring the Championship leaders were back on terms before Fulham could settle into the game.
The visitors continued to threaten and regained the lead in the 37th minute through César Palacios. He showed excellent control to bring down a long ball from defence before a clean finish. The Fulham youngster was one of the standout attacking players on the night and his finish restored his side’s advantage.
West Ham refused to let the deficit disrupt their momentum, however, and struck again just before half-time. Pablo marked his first goal for the club by reacting quickest in first-half stoppage time, following up after the goalkeeper had parried the ball to make it 2-2 at the break.
The four-goal opening half set up an equally intriguing second period, although neither side was able to find the breakthrough immediately after the restart.
Arbeloa then turned to his substitutes as Fulham searched for the goal that would settle the tie.
Bobb proved to be the difference.
The forward found the net in the 78th minute to put Fulham ahead for the third time, scoring his first goal since joining the club and giving the visitors a precious lead with only 12 minutes of normal time remaining.
West Ham responded by pushing forward in search of another equaliser. The hosts continued to apply pressure during the closing stages and looked capable of forcing the tie towards extra time.
Fulham, though, managed to withstand the late pressure and protect their advantage until the final whistle.
The victory sends Fulham into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and gives Arbeloa a second win as Fulham manager, while West Ham’s six-match unbeaten run comes to an end.
For Fulham, the result provides a welcome boost after their difficult opening to the Premier League campaign. For West Ham, attention now turns back to the Championship after a dramatic cup night that ultimately ended in defeat.
Bobb’s late intervention proved decisive, with the substitute’s first Fulham goal ensuring the Cottagers survived a five-goal London derby and secured their place in the next round.
