Midweek Championship Preview: Struggling Derby County In Need Of A Win And Swansea Look To Nick Top Spot

There are nine Championship matches on Tuesday, with a glut of interesting clashes across the second tier.

Derby County boss John Eustace is a man under pressure right now, with his side second-bottom and without a win in their last nine games. Failure to beat Norwich City at Pride Park will stretch that sequence into double figures and could prove to be a tipping point for Eustace – who has been at the helm since February 2025.

Speaking pre-match, the Rams’ boss admitted: “It’s been the toughest three months, definitely, through recruitment and personnel that are available to us. But it’s part of the job and I have to get my head around that and try to find solutions.”

Swansea City have the chance to go top of the table, for 24 hours at least. They can usurp current leaders Middlesbrough, who play on Wednesday, if they win away at Portsmouth. Pompey may prove a tough nut to crack however, as they are unbeaten in their last five league outings.

At the wrong end of the table, bottom side Preston remain on the hunt for their first win under new boss Graham Alexander. They welcome Sheffield United to Deepdale whilst Burnley, another side in the bottom three, travel to QPR looking to rack up just a second win of the campaign and a first under new head coach Fabio Celestini.

Two high-fliers meet in the Midlands as fourth-placed West Brom welcome fifth-placed Southampton to the Hawthorns. Two other sides residing in the play-offs also play Tuesday: sixth-placed Birmingham host Millwall, whilst seventh-placed Stoke travel to Blackburn.

The other games see sides in the lower reaches of the table clash, with Charlton – winless since August – at home to Bolton and Lincoln travelling to Watford.

Wednesday night sees three more games take place across the Championship with West Ham playing their first game since sacking Nuno Espirito Santo. The Hammers travel to Cardiff and could have Scott Parker in the dugout, depending on whether they can thrash out talks to tie down their former midfielder before heading to Wales.

Middlesbrough’s trip to Wrexham and Bristol City’s hosting of Wolves completes the midweek programme.
