Record-breaking rowers win 30 medals at national competition
Hard-working students have helped Reading achieve a new record for the most points earned by a university at a national rowing championships.
Reading University Boat Club came first at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Regatta, held in Nottingham between Friday, 1 May and Monday, 4 May, after securing 30 medals.
Of those 30 medals, fifteen were gold, seven were silver, and eight were bronze.
The tally meant RUBC secured a historic double as the first university to win both the Men’s and Women’s Victor Ludorum (‘winner of the games’) titles in a single year.
Will Rand, RUBC Director of Rowing, said: “It was a truly special weekend and a fitting way to mark our centenary.
“Eleven years ago we switched to competing only in sculling events, meaning we had less than half the events open to us at competitions and less than half the points available. Last year we realised it could be possible to win even with this sole focus on sculling. All the students and coaches have gone above and beyond to help the team make this a reality. We are so excited for what the future holds.”
