Essex Heart Specialist Shortlisted For National Award For Slashing Waiting Times

Adam Langley, Chief Cardiac Physiologist at the world-renowned Essex Cardiothoracic Centre

Cutting waiting times from months to days is making a real difference for hundreds of Essex heart patients, and now the healthcare specialist behind it has been shortlisted for a national award.

Adam Langley, who works at the world-renowned Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC), has been named as one of the UK’s top three echocardiographers, recognising the outstanding contribution he has made to the field.

The Chief Cardiac Physiologist – who monitors and assesses how the heart is working, helping to diagnose conditions and guide patient treatment – is a finalist for Echocardiographer of the Year at the Advancing Healthcare Awards 2026.

Adam was nominated for leading the development of a fast-track referral pathway for patients with severe aortic stenosis – a serious heart condition where the valve that controls blood flow from the heart becomes narrowed, making it harder for blood to circulate around the body.

Previously, patients were waiting around three months to be referred for specialist care after an echocardiogram.

By introducing a new system, that direct referral with rapid review now happens within 48 hours, meaning patients get faster access to assessment and treatment, significantly improving their care and health. This has already benefited over 300 patients.

Of his nomination, Adam said: “I’m incredibly proud to have been shortlisted for this award and of the impact the pathway has had for patients across the region. Reducing referral times from months to days has only been possible because of the commitment and collaboration of physiologists and clinicians across the East of England.

“A huge thank you goes to all of the physiologists involved in implementing the pathway – this simply would not have been possible without their hard work, engagement and dedication to improving patient care.”

Nikki Baines, Deputy Director of Operations at the CTC, said: “Adam is an outstanding physiologist who consistently delivers excellent work. Being shortlisted for an award of this calibre speaks volumes about the quality of his contribution, his professionalism, and the impact he has across our service and beyond.”

The Echocardiographer of the Year award celebrates healthcare scientists who demonstrate excellence in echocardiography. It recognises individuals who champion high-quality, standardised practice, improve patient pathways and outcomes, and actively support the

development of colleagues at every stage of their careers. Winners will be announced in London in June.
