A London Ambulance Service administrator who is preparing to donate a kidney to her diabetic brother is set to take on the London Ambulance Charity’s London Life Hike on Saturday 26 September.
Carolyn Chiddy has been on a remarkable fitness journey in preparing for her sibling’s lifesaving surgery next month, and having already lost 55kg, will close the chapter by taking part in the 6km route of the London Life Hike just eight weeks after the transplant operation.
Carolyn said:
“We always knew my brother would need a kidney transplant.
“I was incredibly grateful to be his match, but knew I needed to get myself into a strong enough position to undergo the surgery. I started walking 8,000 steps a day, often spending my lunchtimes strolling through the beautiful Brompton Cemetery.
“On 25 December, I hit my target weight which was the best Christmas present ever. I knew I was ready for the operation. My brother has had an extremely tough few years with his diabetes and kidney issues – it is amazing that I was given this opportunity to save his life.”
The London Life Hike is open to all, with hikers raising funds for lifesaving initiatives in local communities, including funding additional defibrillators into communities and teaching Londoners what to do when someone suffers a cardiac arrest.
Carolyn said:
“When I heard about the London Life Hike, I was inspired to take part because walking has played a vital role in helping to save my brother. I wanted to raise money so Londoners have a better chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.”
There are two options for people joining the London Life Hike – a 6 km route or a 21km route. Both take in some of London’s most iconic landmarks.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Fenella Wrigley MBE said:
“Carolyn is in inspiration. Not only is she helping to save her brother’s life with her kidney donation, she’s going above and beyond to help save the lives of others. We are honoured to have her join us at the London Life Hike as part of her recovery.
“The Hike will be a fun day out for all and money raised will go towards teaching life-saving skills and installing defibrillators where they are most needed. Please join us – it’s a great day out for a great cause!”
Registration is £10 for adults, £5 for children and £25 for a family ticket. Children under the age of five can join for free.
Join the London Life Hike on Saturday 26 September at 10:30am.
