The figures, published in LLA’s 2025 Sustainability Report, demonstrate the airport’s continued contribution to the local economy, communities and future workforce.
In 2025, the airport spent £41.2 million on works, goods and services with 165 businesses within a 20-mile radius, supported 45 local community programmes and initiatives with grants and investment totalling £635,000 and raised more than £60,000 for charity partners the National Literacy Trust and Luton’s Tokko youth hub.
Underlining LLA’s importance as a major local employer, the report reveals that the airport currently supports approximately 14,700 jobs, with 50% of those employed by the airport operator living within Luton.
As well as supporting local people into local jobs, LLA also maintained its commitment to help develop the workforce of the future through education and engagement with the community. The airport’s flagship “Classroom to Careers” programme continued to provide local students, from primary school through to college, with opportunities to build essential skills and learn about the diverse aviation career pathways available. Over 930 local young people benefitted from LLA’s education and skills development initiatives in 2025.
Alberto Martin, Chief Executive of London Luton Airport, commented: “As one of the largest employers in the area, we’re proud of the contribution London Luton Airport makes to Luton and the wider region. Whether that’s supporting local businesses, creating jobs and opportunities, investing in community projects or helping young people develop skills for the future, we’re committed to ensuring the airport’s success delivers real benefits locally. At the same time, we’re continuing to invest in measures that reduce our environmental impact while creating long-term economic and social value for the communities we serve. This report highlights the progress we’ve made, the challenges we’re still working through and the actions we’re taking to build a more sustainable future.”
Key highlights of LLA’s 2025 social sustainability approach include:

- Investing approximately £634,000 in community initiatives
- Supporting 45 community projects, reaching over 34,000 beneficiaries

In 2025, LLA achieved a 40.6% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared with its 2019 baseline, demonstrating strong progress along its Net Zero trajectory. This progress was driven primarily by the successful implementation of key capital projects, including the transition to a low-carbon vehicle fleet and further energy efficiency measures to reduce overall energy consumption.
Key highlights of LLA’s 2025 environmental sustainability activities and approach include:
- More than 62% of based aircraft* are quieter, more fuel efficient ‘next generation’ aircraft, exceeding the airport’s 2028 target early
- 89% of the airport’s operational ground vehicle fleet and 100% of its pooled Ground Support Equipment (GSE) is now low carbon
- Recycling 81% of the airport’s operational waste in 2025, vs. 60% in 2019, with 100% diversion from landfill maintained
- 34% of passengers travelling to and from the airport using more sustainable modes of transport, up from 29% in 2024
David Vazquez, London Luton Airport Head of Sustainability, said: “As the UK’s fifth largest airport, London Luton Airport recognises the important role that the aviation sector must play in shaping a more sustainable future. The airport’s vision for responsible growth is structured around four interconnected pillars, spanning our teams, our community, our infrastructure and our partners, focusing on reducing and mitigating negative impacts of airport operations, and increasing positive ones.”
