South London Libraries Encourage Kids to ‘Read to the Beat’ This Summer

Libraries in Bromley, Greenwich and Wandsworth will be taking part in ‘Read to the Beat’ – a music-themed Summer Reading Challenge for children.

Devised by charity The Reading Agency, the scheme is aimed at youngsters aged from 4-11 and inspires exploration of the connection between stories and songs and how reading and music both ignite imagination and creativity.

This challenge is brought to life with illustrations by award-winning author/illustrator Harry Woodgate. Meanwhile, Universal Music Group artists are supporting the campaign by sharing their own stories.

Sign-up is free and children collect stickers, a medal and certificate if they read six books over the summer.

Libraries in Bromley, Greenwich and Wandsworth are run by charitable social enterprise GLL under the ‘Better’ brand in partnership with local authorities.

“This is the National Year of Reading, and it’s never been more important to get children excited about stories and all the learning and developmental opportunities they open up,” said Paul Drumm, GLL Partnership Manager for Greenwich Libraries.

“Whilst borrowing books, families can also benefit from the wide range of free activities we’re running in all our libraries throughout the holiday period. Visit or contact your local library to get signed up.”
