London’s Battersea Power Station is entering another stage of its transformation as construction begins on a new Gehry Partners-designed development. The project will add homes, commercial space and community facilities while extending the distinctive architectural character of the riverside neighbourhood.
A New Chapter Officially Begins for Battersea
The new Prospect Place South development forms part of the wider 42-acre Battersea Power Station regeneration project. Construction has now begun on two new buildings designed by the world-famous Gehry Partners, international architecture and design practice founded by architect Frank Gehry himself, extending the existing Prospect Place development and completing the next section of Electric Boulevard.
The development will deliver around 300 new homes, alongside approximately 65,000 sq ft of commercial space for shops, cafés and restaurants. It will also include a 15,000 sq ft Community Hub and an expanded bike hub with space for 600 bicycles.
The new buildings will continue Frank Gehry’s distinctive approach at Battersea, with sculptural white façades designed to complement the existing Prospect Place buildings. The architecture also draws on London’s historic Regency terraces, creating a deliberate contrast with the industrial brickwork of the Grade II* listed Power Station.
The latest designs have also been developed with sustainability in mind, including green roofs and a target of at least 10 per cent biodiversity net gain.
Construction is being led by Sisk, which was appointed as the main contractor earlier this year. The project follows planning approval granted by Wandsworth Council, with the wider development intended to complete Electric Boulevard and contribute to the remaining phases of the Battersea regeneration scheme.
The latest Gehry-designed buildings represent another step in Battersea Power Station’s evolution from a former industrial site into a mixed-use London neighbourhood, adding new homes and public facilities while extending one of the capital’s most recognisable modern architectural districts.
