Mark Neville, 65, has pleaded guilty to a string of charges following an attack last September at the Thistle Hotel, which at the time was the temporary home of a number of asylum seekers.
Following Neville’s conviction, Cllr Una O’Halloran, Leader of the Council, and Dame Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South and Finsbury, issued the following joint statement.
“We welcome Neville’s conviction and, on behalf of the whole borough, we’d like to thank the police, prosecutors, and all those involved in bringing this case to justice.
“The attack on the Thistle Hotel was a despicable, cowardly act that put lives at risk and caused significant distress.
“In Islington, we’re proud to be a diverse, welcoming place – a Borough of Sanctuary. People from all over the world have made their home here, and we’re proud to support them. That commitment will never change.
“The conviction sends a very clear message: hate, intimidation and violence have no place in Islington. Anyone who seeks to divide our communities will fail.
“We always have been, and always will be, a place where everyone, regardless of their background or journey, is supported and welcomed.”
Neville admitted to three separate charges yesterday (Wednesday, 28 October) – attempted arson being reckless as to endanger life, possession of bladed article, and possession of a prohibited weapon in a private place.
