Despite the fact they played 48 hours before everyone else, Bradford City sit atop League One as the only third tier side to have won their opening two matches.
The Bantams pulled off a memorable win away at Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the live TV game on Thursday night, with Aden Baldwin scoring the only goal of a game played in front of a crowd of more than 33,000 at Hillsborough.
A clutch of teams then had the chance to draw level with Graham Alexander’s side on Saturday but all squandered that opportunity. Leicester City’s poor start to life back in League One continued, as Russell Martin’s men suffered a sobering home loss to Burton Albion. The Foxes were two goals down and a man light inside 30 minutes and although they pulled a goal back just before half-time they couldn’t prevent a famous win for the Brewers.
Elsewhere, on a pretty low-scoring afternoon in the division, Luton and Notts County played out a thrilling 2-2 draw, whilst there was a dash of controversy at MK Dons, during their 1-1 draw with Huddersfield. The visitors thought they had doubled their lead in the first half when a shot from Joe Taylor – who opened the scoring – was deemed not to have crossed the line despite replays appearing to show it well over. Predictably, that led to some fans calling for VAR in the lower leagues. Salt was rubbed in the wounds for Huddersfield when MK scored a leveller in the second half to earn a point.
Other winners on Saturday were Leyton Orient, Blackpool and Oxford – all of whom won away from home. Peterborough saw off Mansfield and in doing so, remarkably, became the only League One team to win a home game this weekend. There were stalemates at Doncaster, Wimbledon, Bromley and Wycombe.
In League Two, Bristol Rovers stole the show with a rampant 5-3 win over Newport County – Steve Evans’ side scored four second half strikend-d Two.s to pick up their first win of the new season.
Barnet and Crewe are the only two sides with 100 per cent records. The Bees sealed a 3-1 win away at Shrewsbury whilst the Railwaymen racked up a second straight 1-0 win, seeing off Northampton at home. At the other end of the table big-spending Salford City are one of three teams sitting on zero points in the fourth tier. The Ammies lost 1-0 at home to Chesterfield as their wait to get off the mark continues.
Colchester and Swindon kept up their unbeaten starts with home wins, whilst Exeter and Crawley both got off the marks with victories against Accrington and Rochdale respectively.
There were score draws between Port Vale and Tranmere – who had outfield player Bobby Faulkner in goal for the final 40 minutes – and Rotherham and York, whilst the matches between Walsall and Grimsby and Fleetwood and Gillingham both ended scoreless.
